"Greetings– I’ve joined up on the Zoxsy bandwagon, and am wondering whether I can make the request to add a genre of experimental?  Seems like more and more folks are using that label these days, and it just might help out many artists for whom it is a very appropriate label. Thanks!"
- [emailed] Reconsiderate, Milwaukee

Great idea R. We added experimental under Rock. Click here if you have any more ideas for genres to add – Z

Consult Your Inner Manager – By Lynn Harrison
As an independent artist, sometimes I wish I had a manager.

I imagine her as a kind, wise, competent and courageous person, who always has my best interests at heart. She’d be a whiz at the administrative tasks I hate, and she’d intuitively know which projects and decisions are most important right now.

Most of all, she’d believe in me and the value of my work, even when nothing particularly successful seems to be going on. My manager would be patient, hopeful and matter-of-fact. She’d definitely have a good sense of humour.

From time-to-time, I ask people to help out with various tasks…and I truly appreciate their assistance. Still, nobody has emerged yet as that perfect take-care-of-everything sort of person.

Fortunately, I already have an Inner Manager….

Lately I’ve been checking in with her more often. I find that she’s highly reliable and always on-task…which is even more apparent when I’ve been worried and distracted. My Inner Manager is humming along, calm and smiling, unperturbed by my anxious thoughts.

My Inner Manager knows which gigs are most appropriate for me. She confidently lines those up, while gracefully turning others down.

My Inner Manager is unconcerned with competitions, ranking or status.

My Inner Manager celebrates achievements, large and small, and shrugs off setbacks.

My Inner Manager believes in the value of regular practice.

My Inner Manager knows which songs are most important that I sing, and when I should sing them, and why.

My Inner Manager is always listening.

When I listen to her, I find that I’m calmer about my music activities, and they seem to take on a more meaningful and cohesive shape.

Not every artist is fortunate enough to have an agent, but each of us has an Inner Manager.

She’s always there, ready for our call.

Templeton, Certified Rockstar

Author: Justin Blaney

Templeton from Capetown South Africa is this weeks Zoxsy Rockstar. Click here to check his music out!

Templeton showcases the writing skills of Michael Charles Dirksen, who having played with various bands since the early 90’s, has built up a catalogue of songs that stretches far and wide. From playing with punk outfits, to folk music, exploring jazz, reggae and classical composers, Michael has slowly moulded his sound into what he likes to call “ambient rock”.
Having completed the construction of a recording studio, Templeton is free to dive deeper into the musical abyss and to see what’s on the other side. No live performances are scheduled yet, but the self titled album (Templeton) is available on all major music sites.

Zoxsy: How long have you been a musician/composer promoting yourself on the internet?
Templeton: Just over a year now.

Z: Tell us a little bit about yourself…
T: I’ve been a singer/songwriter since the age of fifteen. Performed in various bands spanning many genres. Traveled extensively gaining life experience along the way. Have just built a recording studio, that’s where I’m at now.
Z: What other interests do you have beside your music?
T: I enjoy nature, gardening and cooking. Anything that relaxes the soul.

Z: What is your favourite song on your new album and why?

T: All of them. Each one has a special memory or feeling attached to it.

Z: What has been your greatest accomplishment as a musician up to date?
T: Finishing this self produced album in my own studio and sharing it with the “online” world.

Z: Do you have a musician/composer that you admire? If so who and why?

T: Yes, all the great classical composers. I have such respect for a piece of music that can move one to great heights without having any lyrics to paint a picture for you – it’s like reading the book before watching the movie.

Z: What are your dreams, goals and aspirations as a recording artist?

T: I would just like to be recognized as a songwriter/producer. I’m not into the “fame” thing or playing Wembley Stadium.

Z: How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life?
T: I am, therefore I create. I gave up the 9 to 5 lifestyle a long time ago and can’t be bothered with the rat race. Luckily I have a partner who leads the same lifestyle, so there is great support either way.

Z: Does a blank score sheet scare you as a composer?
T: No, it needs filling up with fresh tasty notes a.s.a.p.!

Z: If you had to identify something in your work that you’d like to improve, what would it be?
T: To come up with fresh sounds and melodies and to deliver a vocal that compliments that piece.
